ONA EDM Dramatically Improves Die-Sinking Machines Axis Acceleration and Speeds

The NX series of die-sinking erosion machines from ONA Electro-Erosion S.A. consists of 44 standard configurations. The smallest is the ONA NX3, with x-y-z travel of 15.8 x 11.8 x 11.8 inches. The largest model is the TX10, whose travels in those axes are 119, 59, and 39.4 inches, respectively, and which features two heads commanded by two independent CNC generators, allowing two cavities to be eroded simultaneously and independently in a big work pieces with a mass as great as 44,000 pounds. Whatever your need, ONA has a machine sized to meet your needs.

 

The new high speed ONA Standard NX4C die-sinking machine is the latest in the series and features a rise-and-fall work tank. The ONA-S64 CNC has an open control and supervision protocol, and its design that facilitates automation of all sorts of applications. The NX4C has an x-y-z travel capability of 23.6 x 15.8 x 15.8 inches. Its fixed table design allows loading of work pieces up to 3,300 pounds. The NX4C boasts a Z axis speed of 590 inches per minute and an acceleration of 1.0 G which is very useful in deep no flush rib cuts, and can decrease the time by as much as 35% on certain simple ribs. Impressively the Z axis maximum weight capacity is 440 pounds which adds versatility, while also providing outstanding speed and acceleration.

The entire ONA Modular series die-sinking machines NX7, NX8, NX10, TX8 and TX10 have also been dramatically improved.  The “T” in the series designates that the machines are the twin headed versions. The Z axis speeds for the current machines are now nearly 3 times faster and with double the acceleration than last year’s models. All while maintaining the maximum weight capacity of 440 pounds on the Z axis ram.

 

All models in the ONA NX series come equipped with micro fine circuitry for achieving surface finishes to 0 VDI (0.10 µm Ra) and over 10,000 hours long-life filtration system without consumable cartridges.

First let’s examine the reasons why you might consider Cartridge-less filtration:

• “Going Green” is an important trend in both manufacturing in general and EDM in particular. Last September, at IMTS, many of the OEM’s prominently displayed significant advances in EDM technology directed at reducing the impact of EDM on our environment. In 1770, English physicist  Joseph Priestle studied the erosive effect of electrical discharges. Furthering Priestley’s research, the EDM process was invented by two Russian scientists, Dr. B. R. Lazarenko and Dr. N. I. Lazarenko, in 1943. In their efforts to exploit the destructive effects of an electrical discharge, they developed a controlled process for machining of metals. Their initial process used a spark machining process, named after the succession of sparks (electrical discharges) that took place between two electrical conductors immersed in a dielectric fluid. The discharge generator effect used by this machine, known as the Lazarenko circuit, was used for many years in the construction of generators for electrical discharge.

Additional researchers entered the field and contributed many fundamental characteristics of the machining method we know today.

Wire EDM uses deionized water as the dielectric medium compared to Vertical EDM’s that use oil.  The dielectric system includes the water reservoir, filtration system,  deionization system, and water chiller unit.  During machining, the dirty water from cutting is drained into the dirty, unfiltered side of the dielectric reservoir, where the water is then pumped and filtered to 3 microns through a mineral bed vessel, and returned to the clean side of the dielectric tank.  When the vessel approaches its capacity and reaches a set pressure, the unit automatically back flushes the material (swarf) into a separate decant tank, where the material decants  (settles) in the water. This is an exclusive ONA patented  maintenance free, lifetime filtration system.   You never have to purchase paper filter elements or worry about their disposal.  This equates to tremendous cost savings per year.

Following filtration, the clean water is measured for  conductivity, and if required, automatically passes through a vessel that contains a mixed bed of  anion and cation beads.  This mixed bed resin (ion exchange unit) controls the resistivity of the water to set values.

Note: Deionized water is an efficient insulator.  Untreated water is a conductor and would cause unstable cutting, wire breaks and not be usable in the EDM process.  The clean, filtered water now flows into the clean side of the dielectric  reservoir and proceeds to the cutting area.  Used water is drained and returned to the unfiltered, dirty side of the dielectric reservoir to complete the cycle.  A water chiller  is also provided as standard equipment to keep the dielectric, workpiece, worktable, control arms, and fixtures thermally stable.

The quality of the water is constantly measured.   During the cutting process the chips from the material that is being eroded, gradually change and increase the water conductivity level.   When this level becomes too high, the water is automatically directed to pass through the deionizing resin.to bring it to the  correct level.  Resistivity levels  of the water are set at the control according to the cutting requirements of the workpiece material being machined. Another additional cost savings and benefit ONA provides is their patented “EKOADD”.   By using this additive, the polarity of the eroded particles in the dielectric are “neutralized” causing them to cling and be joined together.  This additive extends the life of the resin by 50%  or more, and also helps clean the precision guides and power feed contacts while providing cleaner water.
